The Smithsonian's National Museum of Asian Art, Department of Conservation and Scientific Research (CSR) is pleased to accept applications for the 2024-25 Gretchen and David Welch Program in Advanced Conservation Training. This one-year term fellowship will be awarded to one applicant interested in focusing on the conservation of either Asian three-dimensional objects or works on paper. Fellowships in paper conservation will concentrate on Islamic, South and Southeast Asian, American and Contemporary collections. The fellowship carries a yearly stipend of $50,000 with a yearly $3000 travel/research allowance and yearly $1000 assistance for medical insurance. The fellowship will have a start date in September 2024. To apply, send a cover letter, resume, and contacts for three references to DCSR@si.eduno later than May 15th, 2024

The conservation junior fellow position is an exciting one-year training opportunity with the Straus Center for Conservation and Technical Studies at the Harvard Art Museums that will introduce you to the field of art conservation. The Pre-Program Conservation Junior Fellowship program has been made possible, in part, by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities: Democracy demands wisdom. This program aims to increase access, diversity, and inclusive excellence in the field of art conservation and prepare the junior fellow for potential further training in a graduate degree program.

The Conservation Junior Fellow will work under close supervision of and encouragement by the Straus Center staff. The Junior Fellow will gain knowledge, hands-on experience, and familiarity with various functions involved in the preservation of a range of objects and materials in a lab setting. The Yale University Art Gallery, with its rich collection of over 5,300 textiles, is seeking applicants for a full-time, 2 year durational position of Assistant or Associate reporting to the Susan Morse Hilles Chief Conservator. The Assistant/Associate Conservator of Textiles will condition assess and treat Indonesian textiles in preparation for a comprehensive exhibition planned to open in September of 2025 at the Yale University Art Gallery. Primary responsibilities of this position include condition assessment of objects selected for exhibition; planning, documenting, and performing complex item-level conservation treatments on textiles and garments; completing materials analysis as necessary, including the identification of fibers and colorants, which may be included in the online exhibition catalogue; and assisting Collections and Exhibition teams in safe handling, mounting, installation and de-installation of textiles. Though the focus of this position will be on Indo-Pacific objects, the Assistant or Associate Conservator will also consult on and provide conservation treatment of textiles and garments from other curatorial areas including Ancient, Asian, European, and the Americas, as time permits. The conservator will also be able to explore the rich and important textile collections housed across the Yale University Museums. The incumbent will benefit from working in an active conservation department in dialogue with curators, conservation scientists from Yale's Institute for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage, art handlers, exhibitions staff, registrars, educators, students, and the large conservation community at Yale. The deadline for the job application is May 26, 2024. To apply, please go to Yale University STARS.

The Shelburne Museum is seeking an Associate Conservator to start in September 2024. The Associate Conservator is a member of the Collections department, a dynamic team that stewards Shelburne Museum's world-renowned permanent collections of art and Americana, manages an active calendar of exhibitions, and collaborates with institutions around the world on incoming and outgoing loans. The department includes a Director of Collections and Conservation (a conservator), Registrar, Associate Registrar, Associate Registrar/Archivist/Digital Asset Manager, Collections Manager, Preparator, and two Art Handlers. The Museum's collections are housed in thirty-nine buildings spread out over forty-five beautifully landscaped acres. The Menil Collection is pleased to offer an advanced training fellowship in objects conservation supported by the Mellon Foundation. The term of the fellowship is one year, with the possibility of renewal for an additional two years, commencing in the fall of 2024.

Integrated within the iconic Renzo Piano-designed Menil Collection, the conservation facilities comprise shared and dedicated studios for the conservation of paintings, objects, and works of art on paper, as well as analysis and imaging. Since its founding in 1987, the Menil Collection Conservation Department has distinguished itself by publishing treatments and materials research and participating in artist interviews through the Artists Documentation Program.

The fellowship will provide an opportunity for the conservator to broaden their experience through participation in all activities related to the treatment, installation, exhibition, loan, and research of three-dimensional works of art. The Menil Collection's holdings in objects are diverse, with particular strengths in arts of the Ancient Mediterranean, Africa, and 20th century and contemporary art, and include outdoor sculpture, time-based media, and sculptural works in a multitude of media. During the fellowship period, the Fellow will, in consultation with the Objects Conservators and Director of Conservation, develop and undertake a research project, ideally resulting in a peer-reviewed publication or public presentation. The Fellow will also participate in a museum-wide interns and fellows cohort program to enhance their professional development and create a network of colleagues.

The successful applicant will receive a stipend of $53,000 and a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical and dental insurance, paid holidays, sick and vacation days, and a 401(k) plan. In addition, up to $1,500 will be provided to offset relocation expenses, and generous travel funds are provided to support research and professional development.
