The banquet celebrates the extended English Education community at Buffalo State and recognizes program completers, mentor teachers, and this year’s award winners. The Western New York Network of English Teachers will also present its annual WNYNET English Teaching Awards to local teachers and administrators.

The Buffalo State English Education Student Association (EESA) will recognize Dr. Pixita del Prado Hill, winner of the 2019 English Education Community Award. This award recognizes a member of Buffalo State English Education’s extended community who has supported, worked to sustain, or advocated for our various program initiatives. We will also recognize Dr. del Prado Hill’s efforts to better the lives of teachers and young people in Western New York through her work as a professor in the Elementary Education, Literacy, and Educational Leadership Department and as a co-director of the Professional Development Schools (PDS) Consortium at SUNY Buffalo State.

EESA will also recognize Vanessa Ludwig, winner of the 2019 Inspirational Teacher Award. Ludwig is an ELA teacher at Sweethome Middle School, an officer for the Western New York Network of English Teachers (WNYNET), and a founding member of EESA. She has presented at the National Council of English Teachers and several local and regional conferences. Her students regularly present at the annual Youth Voices conferences and she mentors English teacher candidates each semester by opening up her classroom for fieldwork and observations.

The Buffalo State English Education Alumni Network will present Cheektowaga Central High School English teacher Joel Malley (BS, 2000; MSED, 2005) with the English Education Alumni Award. Malley will deliver the keynote, “Working Towards Greatness: Confessions of a Three-Star Teacher.” The English Education Alumni Award recognizes a graduate of the English Education program at Buffalo State College whose work serves as an inspiration and model for teacher candidates in the program. Malley, a high school English teacher at Cheektowaga Central, demonstrates a broad influence in the field of education through his classroom teaching, mentoring of Buffalo State teacher candidates, his own scholarship, and leadership in the field of English teaching. Previous winners of the Alumni Award include renowned educator, author, and winner of the Global Teacher Award, Nancie Atwell, and Dr. Julie Gorlewski, chair of the Department of Learning and Instruction at the University at Buffalo.
