The International Professional Development Schools (IPDS) annual Beyond and Back: Bridging the World Outside Your Classroom to the World Within event will be held Thursday, April 30 in the Student Union Assembly Halls starting at 2:30 PM.
This year’s event will feature a keynote from Ashley Weselak who is the former SOE graduate assistant and a graduate English Education. Ashley traveled to Rwanda with the Anne Frank Project in 2015 and returned on a Fulbright to continue working in Rwanda for a full year. She then accepted a position to teach in the Dominican Republic, which was followed by a position in Recife, Brazil, where she currently works as an ELA teacher. Ashley received the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence and the President's Medal for Outstanding Graduate student, and she delivered the 2016 graduate student commencement address. Ashley speak about her experiences and the belief that, “a journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step.”
In addition, Laura Hill Rao of the Civic and Community Engagement Office will once again join us to share the myriad of places and ways for individuals – from those who have traveled and now have an urge to continue to those who are still at the rumination-stage – to become civically engaged on a local level.
As always, Beyond and Back will feature The Walkabout – a showcase of posters and stories from IPDS alumni – and plenty of food and fellowship!
The main events will be held from 2:30 PM to 4:15 PM followed by an additional roundtable, Teaching Abroad: What I Wish I Had Known, from 4:30 PM – 5:30 PM – a conversation for teacher candidates and others who are want to learn more about all of the pieces involved in teaching abroad.
