The Patricia H. and Richard E. Garman Art Conservation Department at Buffalo State University is excited to welcome a leading cultural heritage scientist, Dr. Glennis Rayermann, as the Mellon Assistant Professor of Conservation Science this fall.
Dr. Rayermann has been a Visiting Assistant Professor of Conservation Science in the Conservation Center at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University since the fall of 2022. While at NYU, she was a co-organizer of Art Bio Matters (artbiomatters.org) with Dr. Julie Arslanoglu from The Metropolitan Museum of Art and its 2023 biennial conference. Before her time at NYU, she was a Research Associate at the Netherlands Institute for Conservation+Art+Science+ (NICAS) in Amsterdam for the project: 'A Global Infrastructure for Heritage Science', made possible by the Mellon Foundation. During the 2020–21 academic year, Dr. Rayermann was at Buffalo State and taught the Conservation Science: Inorganic Materials in Art & Conservation lecture and laboratory courses as a visiting lecturer and conducted specialized research in our department. We are thrilled to welcome her back.
Dr. Rayermann earned her Ph.D. and M.S. in chemistry at the University of Washington in Seattle and her B.S. in chemistry with distinction from Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, CA. She was awarded graduate research fellowships from the National Science Foundation, the Department of Defense, and the ARCS Foundation. While earning her Ph.D., Glennis executed a technical study of a modern, fake medieval Italian panel painting at the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields. Her multidisciplinary research focuses on materials degradation, developing novel instrumental techniques, biophysical chemistry, and cultural heritage conservation.
