Department Launches New Dual MA/MS Degree

Posted: June 24, 2022

The Patricia H. and Richard E. Garman Art Conservation Department at Buffalo State College is excited to announce its newly approved dual M.A./M.S. degree program. Starting in fall 2022, enrolled students will earn a Master of Arts (M.A.) in the conservation of art and cultural heritage and a Master of Science (M.S.) in conservation science and imaging. This is a significant improvement from the previous M.A. and certificate of advanced study that was previously awarded. It’s also unique in that Buffalo State is now the only conservation graduate program in North America offering a dual degree in conservation.

This new M.A./M.S. degree meets the educational goals and career objectives of providing the arts, humanities, and cultural heritage sectors with well-educated, highly qualified, and responsible conservators. Our graduates will be ready to fill higher level positions in museums, libraries, archives, and regional conservation centers as they enter the field with a dual master’s degree. The New York State Education Department approved the M.A./M.S. degree in October 2021 and NASAD (the National Association of Schools of Art and Design) accredited it in May 2022.
