Karen Ferington is the department's Adjunct Librarian and Archivist. She is a retired Professor/Librarian from the Niagara campus of SUNY where she served as Cataloging Librarian and College Archivist for over 26 years.
As Professor/Librarian, Karen’s library responsibilities included: selection, cataloging and classification of all of the media collection; teaching library instruction classes; and assisting students and faculty with their research requests. In the college archives, she planned, organized, and cataloged all of the archival materials into a collection where it was easy to find any document. Karen is a native of Wisconsin and is a lifetime member of the American Library Association. She has also been a member of the Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus and the Buffalo Master Chorale.
Her work in the Art Conservation Library focuses on: helping students, faculty, and alumni with their research requests; ordering new books; working in cooperation with Butler Library to have all materials cataloged and classified; receiving and processing donations; maintaining a current inventory of periodicals; creating library policies; and apprising faculty of all new acquisitions.
Karen also does presentations for our students with a “Library Orientation” in their first semester and a “Library Research” seminar in the second semester. The goal is to help students become aware of the vast amount of materials available to them from the Butler Library website and to learn how to search the pertinent databases that are most useful for art conservation research.
The department Archives are also a part of Karen’s responsibilities. Her work in that area includes: collecting and receiving archival materials from the department; sorting and organizing these materials for ease of use; transferring them to archivally-safe folders; and assisting researchers with questions related to the Archives.
All students and alumni have access to our library and archives so Karen is always available to help and answer questions.
